Building and Sharing #6

One step closer to having a working version of the Content Collector application. I’m actually renaming it to TechShare, why? The tech community loves to share and I think this could be a nice way to build communities and share tech resources and anything related with anybody interested. For example, you could have a collection that contained links to the channels of your favourite React tutorials or Algorithm walkthroughs. I plan to spend more time on this project over the rest of this year but I want to have something usable deployed and available to use. My current timeline suggests the end of this week and I’m excited to release it and get some feedback.

I’m working on doing the final CSS touch up to make it presentable but it is still a work in progress. Then I’ll be setting up a server and using Docker containers to standardize the environment and finalising the Circle CI set up so we have a smoothly operating and reliable application.

Reading: The Science of Self-Learning (How to teach yourself anything) Peter Hollins

70% of the way through this book and I’ve picked up some good points to help me be more effective in my self-learning. Hollins stresses planning and organisation as crucial to self-study and says we should spend almost the same amount of time planning and evaluating as we do executing. From my experience I can second the importance of planning, taking on an endeavour such as learning to build full-stack web applications requires planning and structure. Your learning has to be specific and highly focused and you need to have strict deadlines. I personally like to use my google calendar to set my overarching focus for a particular time period:

One thing this journey has taught me is the importance of focus. I realised that my progress was being set back by trying to work on too many things at the same time. The progress I’ve made since deciding to limit my circle of focus has been incredible and I recommend removing the unnecessary distractions from your to-do list.
